I heard of a conversation with the greatest guarders the time of the rasul (s.a.w.s) called Ubay. Umar ibn Khattab said to Ubay “Ya Ubay, what is taqwa?”
The immediate benefit of hadra is twofold. The one is the silencing of internal dialogue and the second is the shifting of attention or if you like the assemblage point of attention from behind your eyeballs to behind your solar plexus. These are the two immediate physiological attributes of a good hadra. That’s what hadra is trying to produce.
If you truly believed that there is a designing genius, then nothing that can happen to you is outside of the plan. And that you’re always in safe hands. So it is useful to understand just how dangerous how the atheists are. But its also useful to understand, how helpful they are. They objectify for you your own kufr, your own faithlessness.
The qasidah which we sing in dhikr, “aheemu wahdee bi dhikri rabbee,” Shaykh Muhammad ibn al-Habib says, “I’m alone in the remembrance of my Lord. The remembrance of my Lord, it is the cure.”
The truth of our individual existence is that we don’t exist as individuals. We are constituted by that which is not us. Every human being alive, in fact, you as you sit there right now are a collection of elements and energies and forces that have colluded and collided from various parts of the universe to make who you are now.
